The Africa Cup of Nations 2025 in Morocco delivered drama and high-stakes football in its Round of 16 as the tournament moved into the knockout phase. From commanding performances by traditional powerhouses to nail-biting penalty shootouts and narrow victories, the path to the quarter-finals is beginning to take shape.

Senegal Shows Class to Reach Quarters

In one of the standout matches of the round, Senegal overcame Sudan 3-1 in Tangier to become the first team to book their spot in the quarter-finals. Sudan stunned many by taking an early lead through Aamir Abdallah, but the Teranga Lions responded with authority. Midfielder Pape Gueye scored twice to turn the tide, and teenager Ibrahim Mbaye sealed the win with a late goal after coming off the bench.

The victory not only underscored Senegal’s title ambitions but also showcased their depth  with star players stepping up at crucial moments. They now prepare to face Mali in Tangier for a place in the final four.

Mali Survive Drama to Shock Tunisia

In Casablanca, Mali produced one of the round’s most dramatic results by eliminating Tunisia in a penalty shootout after a fiercely contested 1-1 draw. Mali had to play much of the game with ten men following a red card, yet dug deep to earn a late equalizer and ultimately prevailed 3-2 in spot kicks.

Morocco buoyed by roaring home support ominated possession but were made to work hard by an energetic Tanzanian side that defended resolutely and created several promising attacks of their own. The win sets up a quarter-final clash against Cameroon.

Cameroon Prevails in Tactical Battle
