Somali international referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan received a hero’s welcome upon his arrival in Mogadishu on Wednesday morning after being denied entry into the United States while traveling to officiate matches linked to preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The incident attracted significant attention both within Somalia and among football circles across Africa, with many expressing disappointment that one of the country’s most accomplished sports officials was unable to undertake an assignment at such an important stage of international football.

For many Somalis, the development was seen not only as a personal setback for Artan but also as a missed opportunity for the country to be represented on another major global platform.Despite the disappointment surrounding the incident, Omar Artan returned home to a reception filled with pride, respect, and encouragement.

At Aden Adde International Airport, he was warmly welcomed by government officials, representatives of the Somali Football Federation, fellow referees, football stakeholders, and members of civil society who gathered to express solidarity and appreciation for his continued service to Somali football. The reception underscored the esteem in which Artan is held throughout the country.

Over the years, he has emerged as one of Somalia’s most recognizable sporting figures, breaking barriers and earning international appointments through dedication, professionalism, and consistency on the pitch.Among those who received him was Somalia’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Mohamed Abdulkadir Ali, alongside senior government officials and football administrators who praised his contribution to the sport and reaffirmed their support for his future endeavors.

Speaking shortly after his arrival, Omar Artan delivered a message that resonated with many Somalis. Rather than dwelling on the setback, he chose to focus on the future and the opportunities that lie ahead.

“I’m not disappointed about not being able to enter the United States. However, I promise you that at the next World Cup, I will go much further and make history,” he said.

His statement quickly gained attention across social media, with supporters praising his resilience, confidence, and determination. Many described his remarks as a reflection of the spirit that has enabled him to rise through the ranks of international refereeing despite the challenges often faced by officials from developing football nations.Artan’s journey has become an inspiration to countless young Somalis aspiring to build careers in sports.

In a country where football continues to unite communities and inspire hope, his achievements have demonstrated that Somali talent can compete and excel on the global stage. His success has also helped shine a spotlight on the growing quality of Somali refereeing and the potential of the country’s sports sector.

While questions and debate continue regarding the circumstances that prevented his travel to the United States, many observers believe the overwhelming public support he received upon his return has transformed the narrative. Instead of being remembered solely for a denied entry, the episode has highlighted the respect he commands among Somalis and the determination that continues to define his career.

For many, Omar Artan’s story is about far more than a travel setback. It is a story of perseverance, national pride, and unwavering ambition. As he looks ahead to future international assignments and the next FIFA World Cup, his promise to “make history” has become a source of inspiration for football fans across Somalia and beyond.

The warm reception he received in Mogadishu served as a reminder that, regardless of temporary obstacles, his contributions to Somali football remain deeply valued.

For supporters, the message was clear: Omar Artan’s journey is far from over, and many believe his greatest achievements may still lie ahead.
