Abukar Osman: Somalia’s Strong Voice at the United Nations Security Council

Somalia’s presence in the international diplomatic stage has always been shaped by its diplomats, and at the forefront of this mission stands Abukar Osman, Somalia’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, known for his eloquence, strategic thinking, and unwavering commitment to Somalia’s sovereignty, Osman has become a key figure in defending the country’s interests on the global stage particularly in response to Israel’s policies regarding Somaliland Recognition.

Biography of Abukar Osman

Abukar Osman has dedicated his career to diplomacy and international relations.        

Born and raised in Somalia. He is reported to have studied political science and international law, building a strong foundation for his diplomatic career.

 Over the years, Osman has represented Somalia in numerous international forums, consistently advocating for peace, stability, and the protection of Somalia’s territorial integrity.

Before his current appointment as Permanent Representative to the UN, Osman held several significant positions within Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he focused on multilateral diplomacy, conflict resolution, and strengthening bilateral relations. His experience and leadership have made him an indispensable asset to Somalia on the world stage.

The Role of Somalia’s UN Representative

As Somalia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Abukar Osman leads the country’s diplomatic missions at the United Nations. His responsibilities include:

  • Representing Somalia in the UN Security Council and other UN bodies.
  • Advocating for Somalia’s sovereignty, peace, and security.
  • Engaging in debates and negotiations on international issues affecting Somalia and the Horn of Africa.

UN Security Council Debate: Defending Somalia’s Sovereignty

Abukar Osman Abukar Osman delivered a powerful defense of Somalia’s unity during the UN Security Council session on December 29, 2025.

 During a heated debate with the representative of Israel, Osman strongly condemned Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, describing it as a direct violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and a potential threat to regional stability.

In his address, Osman emphasized that Somalia is one nation, encompassing all regions claimed by Somaliland. He reminded the council that only two regions had previously been under British Somaliland, while 45% of Somaliland’s claimed territory remains under Somali government control. He also highlighted the importance of diplomatic dialogue, urging parties to respect international law and Somalia’s territorial integrity.

His speech resonated with other member states, reinforcing Somalia’s position as a unified and sovereign nation. Osman’s performance exemplified the skill and determination required to represent Somalia on the global stage effectively.

The Man Behind Somalia’s Diplomatic Missions

Abukar Osman is more than just a diplomat; he is a strategist and advocate for Somalia’s interests.
