Junet Mohammed, Suna East MP and Leader of Minority in the National Assembly, has hit back at ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, who accused him of mismanaging 2022 Azimio coalition campaign funds.

Sifuna had alleged that part of the money sent by former President Uhuru Kenyatta to the Azimio campaign never reached party agents and was allegedly diverted. He claimed Junet was personally responsible for failing to deliver the funds and leaving election agents unpaid, effectively undermining the campaign.

Kila mtu aseme ile kazi alifanya 2022 ulikuwa unakula pesa ya Uhuru badala ulipe agents ukaacha hawa wamunyoro wametupiga,” Sifuna said.

In response, Junet revealed a chain of control that implicates Uhuru Kenyatta and his aides in the mishandling of money meant for election agents. According to Junet, the funds were first released by Uhuru to his brother, Muhoho Kenyatta, who then tasked Patrick Mburu with recruiting and paying agents. Junet claims Mburu, who presented himself as an IT expert capable of monitoring election results, never delivered the agents to Raila Odinga’s campaign.

“The fact is once they took charge, they never procured any agents for Hon. Raila Odinga not in Mt. Kenya, not in Luo Nyanza. It was a long con game,” Junet said. He pointed out that Mburu remains a trusted aide of Uhuru, citing a recent trip to Nigeria with Uhuru and Kalonzo Musyoka as evidence of his continued influence. Junet also described a restricted Westlands office where Muhoho Kenyatta allegedly managed agent payments so exclusive that even Raila Odinga reportedly could not access it freely.

Junet strongly defended his loyalty to Raila Odinga, stressing that he had faithfully handled sensitive assignments over the years. “Hon. Raila Odinga would have had no reason whatsoever to appoint me as Leader of Minority if I had truly betrayed him,” he said.

The exchange exposes a public rift within ODM, revealing deep mistrust and unresolved disputes over the 2022 election machinery. Kenyans are now left asking: who really controlled the campaign funds, and who ultimately cost Azimio the election?
