Five Elite SOG Officers Killed in Al-Shabaab IED Attack at Wantey Dam, Lafey Mandera County

Five Kenyan security officers attached to the elite Special Operations Group (SOG) have been killed following a deadly ambush by suspected Al-Shabaab militants in Mandera County, marking another serious security incident along the volatile Kenya–Somalia border.

The attack occurred on Tuesday night in the Alungu area near Wantey Dam in Lafey Sub-county, where the officers were conducting a routine security patrol aimed at preventing militant infiltration and protecting communities living close to the border.

According to preliminary security reports, the patrol vehicle struck an improvised explosive device (IED) believed to have been planted by Al-Shabaab militants along the route. The powerful explosion destroyed the vehicle, killing all five officers on the spot.

The Special Operations Group is among Kenya’s most highly trained security units, often deployed to high-risk areas to conduct counter-terrorism operations against Al-Shabaab militants operating near the Somalia border.

The latest attack comes amid heightened security concerns in Mandera County following a series of coordinated assaults carried out by suspected Al-Shabaab fighters over the past several days.

On Friday, the militant group launched attacks on the towns of Fino and Arabia, both located within Lafey Sub-county. The incidents raised fears that the extremists were attempting to increase their activities in the region by targeting security installations and disrupting government operations.

Security analysts say the use of roadside bombs remains one of Al-Shabaab’s preferred tactics because they can inflict significant casualties while exposing militants to minimal direct confrontation. The group has repeatedly used IEDs against security patrols operating in Kenya’s northeastern counties, particularly Mandera, Wajir and Garissa.

The Kenya–Somalia border has remained one of the country’s most challenging security fronts due to its vast and porous nature, allowing militants to cross between the two countries and stage attacks before retreating across the border.

Following Tuesday night’s deadly explosion, security agencies have reportedly intensified operations across the affected areas, with additional personnel deployed to pursue those responsible and secure major roads used by security patrols and civilians.

Authorities are also expected to review patrol routes and strengthen counter-IED measures as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the attack.

The deaths of the five SOG officers represent a significant loss to Kenya’s security forces, highlighting the persistent threat posed by Al-Shabaab despite ongoing counter-terrorism efforts by Kenyan security agencies and regional partners.

Residents in Lafey and surrounding areas have been urged to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by reporting any suspicious movements or activities that could help prevent further attacks.

Kenya has continued to face intermittent attacks linked to Al-Shabaab, particularly in counties bordering Somalia, where security forces have maintained continuous operations to disrupt militant networks and safeguard civilian populations.

As investigations continue, security officials are expected to release further details regarding the identities of the fallen officers and the progress of ongoing operations targeting the perpetrators.

The latest incident serves as a stark reminder of the evolving security challenges facing Kenya’s northeastern region and the sacrifices made by frontline security personnel in protecting the country’s territorial integrity and the safety of its citizens.
