Lafey Constituency in Mandera County witnessed one of its largest public empowerment initiatives on Tuesday as National Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Moses Wetang’ula led a high-profile delegation of national leaders to a community empowerment programme hosted by Lafey Member of Parliament Hon. Mohamed Abdikheir.
The event brought together senior government officials, Members of Parliament, local leaders and thousands of residents, with the programme focusing on strengthening security, education and public administration through the distribution of transport equipment to frontline service providers.
At the centre of the initiative was the donation of 92 motorcycles and one Toyota Probox vehicle, which were handed over to National Police Reservists (KPRs), chiefs, schools, madrasa leaders and Lafey Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institution.
The equipment is expected to improve mobility for officers and institutions that often operate across vast and remote parts of the constituency, where transportation remains a significant challenge.
Speaking during the event, Lafey MP Mohamed Abdikheir said the empowerment programme was inspired by the everyday challenges experienced by security personnel, school administrators and community leaders who are required to travel long distances while delivering essential public services.
He noted that improving transport for frontline workers would enhance service delivery, strengthen security operations and ensure that education administrators are able to reach schools more efficiently.
According to the distribution plan, heads of four secondary schools together with 21 primary and junior schools received a total of 25 motorcycles. Another 25 motorcycles, alongside one Toyota Probox, were allocated to Kenya Police Reservists to improve security operations across the constituency.
Sixteen motorcycles were issued to madrasa leaders, while Lafey TVET received one motorcycle to support its operations.
Abdikheir described the initiative as an investment in the people who serve communities daily, adding that empowering local institutions remains critical in accelerating development and improving livelihoods in the region.
He also expressed gratitude to the residents of Lafey for turning out in large numbers to receive the visiting delegation, saying the overwhelming attendance reflected the community’s commitment to development and unity.
The event was presided over by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, who commended the initiative and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring equitable development across every region of the country.
Addressing residents, Wetang’ula said Kenya belongs to all its citizens regardless of geography or ethnicity, stressing that no region should feel left behind in the national development agenda.
He credited President William Ruto’s administration with expanding development projects to previously underserved regions, including North Eastern Kenya, particularly through investments in road infrastructure and improved access to government services.
The Speaker said the government had simplified the process of obtaining national identity cards, removing bureaucratic hurdles that had previously delayed many eligible citizens from acquiring the crucial document.
He encouraged residents, especially young people who had attained voting age, to apply for national identification cards and subsequently register as voters ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Wetang’ula said participation in elections remains one of the strongest ways citizens can influence leadership and development priorities, urging residents to exercise their democratic rights peacefully and responsibly.
Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale, who also attended the programme, praised the empowerment initiative, describing it as a practical intervention that directly addresses challenges faced by frontline officers and public institutions.
He said motorcycles would significantly improve the ability of security personnel, chiefs and education officers to reach remote villages, respond quickly to emergencies and strengthen government presence across the constituency.
Duale further commended the collaboration between national leaders and local leadership, saying such partnerships play an important role in delivering development projects that have a direct impact on citizens.
He also called on residents to support ongoing government programmes, citing continued investments in infrastructure, public services and reforms aimed at enhancing service delivery in North Eastern Kenya.
Beyond the distribution of transport equipment, the event also marked the launch of a fresh national identity card registration exercise alongside voter registration mobilization aimed at increasing civic participation across the region.
Leaders present encouraged eligible residents to take advantage of the simplified registration process, emphasizing that possession of a national ID is essential not only for voting but also for accessing numerous government services and opportunities.
The empowerment programme also served as a platform for national leaders to highlight ongoing government investments in North Eastern Kenya, with speakers pointing to improvements in infrastructure, public administration and service delivery as evidence of increased attention to the region.
Throughout the gathering, leaders repeatedly underscored the importance of peace, unity and inclusive development, urging residents to continue supporting initiatives that strengthen social cohesion while improving livelihoods.
The event attracted several Members of Parliament from different parts of the country, reflecting broad political support for the initiative.
Among those present were President William Ruto’s aide Farouk Kibet, Mandera East MP Hussein Weytan, Nominated MP Abdisirat Khalif, Bura MP Yakub Adow Kuno, Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, Kitutu Chache North MP Japheth Nyakundi, Shinyalu MP Fredrick Ikana, Taveta MP John Bwire and Nambale MP Geoffrey Mulanya, alongside local administrators, religious leaders, education stakeholders and community representatives.
As the ceremony concluded, beneficiaries expressed optimism that the newly acquired motorcycles and vehicle would ease movement across difficult terrain, enhance coordination among institutions and improve the delivery of services to residents living in remote areas.
