During the 63rd Madaraka Day celebrations held in Wajir, President William Ruto officially agreed to rename the newly constructed Wajir Stadium as Ahmed Khalif Wajir Stadium, following a formal request from Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi. The decision marked a defining moment of recognition for one of the region’s most remembered political figures, the late Hon. Ahmed Khalif, former Wajir West MP and Cabinet Minister.
The renaming came after Governor Ahmed Abdullahi used his address during the national celebration to propose that the modern stadium be permanently named in honour of the late leader. The Governor framed the request as a matter of legacy and memory, urging that the facility reflect the contribution of a leader who once represented Wajir at the highest level of national leadership.
Governor Abdullahi said, “It would be a befitting tribute for the people of Wajir to name this magnificent stadium the Ahmed Khalif Stadium.” In this statement, the Governor emphasized that the stadium is not just an infrastructure project but a symbolic public space that should carry the name of a leader who represented both regional pride and national service. His use of the phrase “befitting tribute” underscored the idea that Ahmed Khalif’s legacy deserved permanent public recognition.
The Governor also reflected personally on his political journey, stating, “I am an accidental politician. I engaged in politics for the first time in 2002 not to contest but to help Ahmed Khalif, a man I admired, to reclaim his seat as his campaign manager.” This remark highlighted the deep personal admiration he held for Khalif and reinforced the emotional weight behind the renaming request. It also showed that Khalif was not only a political figure but also a source of inspiration for emerging leaders in the region.
Responding to the request, President Ruto immediately accepted the proposal and confirmed the renaming. He said, “I will make sure that it is complete and is built to international standards. I agree with you that this stadium should be called Ahmed Khalif Wajir Stadium.”
In this statement, the President gave two clear assurances. First, he committed to ensuring the stadium’s completion and upgrade to international standards, reaffirming the government’s investment in sports infrastructure in Wajir. Second, and most importantly, he officially endorsed the renaming, giving it national approval at the highest level of government. His phrase “I agree with you” served as the formal acceptance of the Governor’s request, effectively sealing the decision.
The renaming of the stadium to Ahmed Khalif Wajir Stadium now stands as a permanent public honour for the late leader, whose contributions to Wajir politics remain widely acknowledged. The decision ensures that every reference to the stadium will carry the memory of Khalif’s name, embedding his legacy into the daily life of the county.
Ahmed Khalif served as Wajir West MP and became the first Cabinet Minister from the region in the administration of former President Mwai Kibaki. His appointment to the Cabinet was widely viewed as a breakthrough moment for representation from Northern Kenya at the national level. His political journey, though cut short, remains a reference point in discussions about leadership and inclusion in national governance.
He died in a plane crash in January 2003, just days after being sworn in as Minister for Labour. His sudden death brought an abrupt end to a rising political career that many believed would have shaped national labour and development policies. The renaming of the stadium, therefore, restores his name to a visible national space, transforming remembrance into a permanent landmark.
The decision taken in Wajir reflects a broader recognition of historical political figures through public infrastructure. By assigning his name to a major stadium, the government has ensured that Ahmed Khalif’s legacy will remain physically present in the county’s social and sporting life for generations to come.
With the President’s formal approval, Wajir Stadium will officially carry the name Ahmed Khalif Wajir Stadium, making the renaming not just a proposal, but a completed act of national recognition.
